Prison Camp Release Paths

The Marion County Prison Camp is a locally operated county prison or work facility, not an SCDC institution simply because state inmates have been housed there. A county inmate’s exit belongs in the Camp’s institutional record and the Marion court file. If SCDC was the legal custodian under a designated-facility arrangement, the person’s state custody and eventual discharge belong in SCDC systems.

This distinction changes the meaning of “release.” A county term may end through time served, sentence completion, a court order, or transfer. An SCDC inmate can leave the local building while remaining in state custody at another site. When SCDC custody itself ends, the separate Released Inmate Search can record the release date and type. A county filter in that state dataset does not prove the person walked out of the Prison Camp or the nearby Detention Center.

Confirm Prison Camp Releases

No current dedicated facility page, live release feed, or public roster was verified for the Prison Camp. A former county page returns a county-branded error page. That gap makes a direct custodian question essential. Do not assume that the Detention Center’s public interface includes every Camp record.

1. Confirm the facility name, including the Prison Camp and Prison Farm variants.
2. Ask whether the person served a county sentence or was held under SCDC authority.
3. For county custody, request the existing institutional release or transfer entry and check the court sentence.
4. For SCDC custody, search the current SCDC system by SCDC ID, SID, or name.
5. After state release, search the separate SCDC release tool by date range and county.
6. If the person transferred, follow the recorded destination rather than treating the move as community release.

A missing record in one system is not a final answer. The Camp’s administrative history, record-access gap, name variants, and mixed custody roles can all produce a failed name search. The Marion County released inmate hub supplies the broader court, VINE, federal, and written-request paths when the last custodian remains unclear.

Note: Use both Prison Camp and Prison Farm names when asking staff to locate an older record.

SCDC Prison Camp Release Records

The current SCDC inmate search covers people sentenced to and incarcerated in SCDC as of midnight the previous day. It can be searched by SCDC ID, SID, first name, last name, and optional phonetic matching. SCDC expressly excludes released people, county jail sentences, parole, probation, and other community supervision. Its use here depends on proof that SCDC held the person.

For an actual state discharge, use the SCDC Released Inmate Search. It requires a start date, end date, and county selection, with an optional sex-offender filter. Visible results include SCDC ID, name, sex, race, age, release date, release type, county, and an indicator. Export adds SID, victim, detainer, and most-serious-offense fields. The tool has no photo field.

Release types such as RELEASED, PROBATION, PAROLE, or COMMUNITY SUPV describe the end of SCDC custody and may show that supervision follows. They do not prove the physical gate or county building used. For a real person’s projected date before release, the current detail report and SCDC Inmate Records are the better sources. After release, use the actual state release date and type.

Prison Camp Records Contact

The 2025 South Carolina Jail Administrators Association directory supplies the facility address, telephone, and fax below. Research did not verify public records hours, a dedicated records email, or a current online facility page. Call before visiting and ask Marion County Administration to identify the present records custodian.

For a county record, use the Marion County FOIA process and state that the request concerns the Prison Camp or Prison Farm. Ask County Administration to route it to the current custodian. Give the person’s full name, identifier, sentence or booking range, and the exact existing admission, release, or transfer record sought.

The county form directs requests to Marion County FOIA Requests, Administration Building, 2523 East Highway 76, P.O. Box 183, Marion, SC 29571. The main number is 843-423-3904 and fax is 843-275-6127. Posted charges are $0.20 per page, $5 per USB, and the lowest-paid capable employee’s rate for search, retrieval, and redaction. Ask for a cost notice before the total exceeds a stated limit.

Note: Confirm the current custodian and public access hours before visiting the Camp or County Administration.

Request Prison Camp Release Proof

A precise request is more likely to locate the correct record. South Carolina FOIA does not require a public body to create an explanation or answer a set of questions. Ask for an identifiable record that already exists. For a county sentence, the core request is the institutional admission and release or transfer entry. A court request can separately seek the judgment, sentence, disposition, and filed orders.

South Carolina FOIA generally gives the public body ten working days to determine availability for records no more than 24 months old and twenty working days for older material. A determination is not production. When records are available, production is generally due within 30 calendar days after a newer-record determination or 35 calendar days for older material, subject to deposit timing and the statute.

About Marion Prison Camp

Official records use both “Marion County Prison Camp” and “Marion County Prison Farm.” Preserve both names in calls and written requests. A 2013 South Carolina Attorney General opinion recorded the sheriff’s description of a county Prison Farm holding state and county inmates. It also explained that control of the Detention Center had shifted to the sheriff without the same resolution for the Camp, which historically remained under County Administrator supervision.

County Council records continued to name the Camp. In February 2023, the sheriff told Council that a decision was needed on whether it would become part of the Detention Center or stay separate. An August 2025 Council agenda referred to an agreement involving “Marion County Prison Farm Officers.” These records support continued administrative references, but they do not settle today’s precise structure. Confirm it with the county.

A 2019 SCDC response listed location code 780, a dated population of 20, and local public-works assignments. That is historical placement data, not a current capacity or an annual release count. No official annual Camp-release total or average stay was found.

Prison Camp Versus Detention Center

The facilities sit near each other in Mullins but have distinct addresses, telephone numbers, histories, and possible record custodians. The sheriff-controlled Marion County Detention Center is the primary local pretrial jail. The Camp is a county prison or work facility whose administrative relationship has changed and remained under discussion.

Do not copy the Detention Center address, telephone, online interface, or release timing onto the Camp. No source confirmed that those details govern both facilities. Likewise, the absence of a current Camp webpage does not establish that it closed or merged.

Prison Camp Transfer Questions

A transfer should be documented as a change of custody, not a community release. Ask for the recorded destination and authority. If SCDC remained the legal custodian, movement to another designated site may only change location. If a county sentence ended into another county or federal hold, the receiving agency becomes the next source.

No reliable primary source established a current Marion County ICE detention contract or 287(g) agreement. ICE should appear only when a specific record says immigration hold or transfer. A generic detainer field is not enough. ODLS may help during its current or recent scope, but later absence is not durable release proof.

Marion Camp Court Follow-Up

Search the Marion Public Index by party name or case number for General Sessions records. Review the sentence, disposition, and filed orders. Marion Summary Court or a municipal clerk may hold other matters, and only some municipal cases appear in the statewide index. A court record can explain the authority for release but may not show the facility’s actual departure time.

When an SCDC release type shows probation, parole, or community supervision, check SCDPPPS and SC VINE. Those statuses mean the person is outside prison custody but may remain under legal supervision. SCDPPPS results reflect the prior day and can drop a person after supervision ends, so the Marion office is the same-day fallback.

Keep the custody stages separate: court sentence, county or SCDC confinement, institutional release or transfer, and any supervision that follows. That sequence prevents the Camp’s complex placement history from producing a false release conclusion.
